10 Marvel Movie And TV Show Scenes That Traumatized Everyone

Marvel has been creating movies that inspire hope and put heroes on a pedestal for decades, but that doesn"t mean that every Marvel project steered clear of causing major trauma. Both within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and in the years before the franchise took off, Marvel has been the home to a variety of heroes and villains that have been at the heart of some inspiring and other horrifying storylines. And while they may be known for their hero movies, there are some scenes that feel like they belonged to something far darker.
Whether the heroes fail to save the day, villains manage to do some heinous thing, or the backstory gets particularly dark, there are plenty of moments in Marvel projects that go dark. And in many cases, these moments enhanced the overall project, raising the stakes, and making the hero all the more heroic for their actions in the moment. Ultimately, you can"t have the good without the bad, and Marvel has managed to take that message into the movies and TV shows it has inspired over the years.
10 Thanos Snapped Away Half The MCU In Avengers: Infinity War Undoubtedly, Avengers: Infinity War changed the game when it came to superhero movies. While many earlier superhero movies put the heroes in a tough spot, Infinity War had the ability to actually have the heroes lose thanks to the two-part nature of the concluding chapter in the Infinity Saga. While Thanos popped up at earlier moments, this film served as his proper introduction, and it did not disappoint in portraying the Mad Titan as the biggest threat the Avengers and the galaxy had ever faced.
Related 10 Early Superhero Movies Every Superhero Fan Needs To Watch The earliest superhero movies are largely to thank for the gargantuan success of the genre today and deserve another watch from superhero fans.
Posts After kicking off the movie with his brutal murder of Loki, and then dominating the Hulk, Thanos acquired nearly all the infinity stones. Despite the Earth-bound heroes" best efforts to stop Thanos from getting the Mind Stone from Vision, he was ultimately able to overpower the heroes and, in a moment that changed the MCU and the landscape of superhero movies forever, he snapped half of all life in the universe out of existence.
9 Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man Fails To Save Gwen Stacy In Amazing Spider-Man 2 Changing gears and moving outside the MCU proper, The Amazing Spider-Man movies were set up to re-establish Spidey"s popularity on the big screen after the MCU had begun to flourish. The movies starring Andrew Garfield as the titular hero were a huge shift from the earlier Sam Raimi trilogy, but the changes did provide insights into another side of Peter Parker. Namely, his relationship to Gwen Stacey.
Gwen Stacey was a significant part of Peter"s life and origin story in the comics, and soon after the pair were a couple, she tragically dies. However, the Raimi trilogy skipped over this narrative. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the film features this excruciating moment that breaks Spidey"s heart, and causes audiences everywhere to go silent. And the fact that the planned sequel was canceled made this death even more painful until years later when Andrew Garfield"s Spider-Man had a redeeming moment in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
8 The Blood Bath Club In Blade In 1998, Blade broke new ground for superhero movies and Marvel. The film, starring Wesley Snipes, created a dark horror story that played into the popularity of the monster genre with the inclusion of Vampires, while also taking inspiration from a superhero comic book. However, this was nothing like the Tim Burton Batman movie, or the hope-filled Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve. Instead, it leaned into something much bleaker.
Related 10 Great Superhero Fight Scenes In Terrible Movies Some Marvel and DC movies have not been as good as expected, but they still managed to deliver impactful fight scenes that are truly great.
Posts While the entirety of the trilogy is underlined with intense violence, killer vampires, and other dark scenes, the most confronting moment comes right at the top of the first movie. When a man is brought to a mysterious rave being held in the back of a slaughterhouse, he is terrified when he begins to see the drops of blood raining down from the ceiling. It"s at this point that the movie reveals the club is full of vampires, and he is their next unwitting victim. Until Blade arrives to settle some scores, of course.
7 Otto Octavius' Tentacles Take Control In Spider-Man 2 Returning to Spider-Man, the original Spider-Man 2, directed by Sam Raimi, saw the popular horror director put those skills to good use in the scene where the villain is transformed from an inquisitive scientist, to a monster. Doctor Otto Octavius was a respected scientist who was leading the charge on creating a new sustainable energy source. However, due to a lack of preparation, and rushing to cross the finish line, Otto"s first public display ended in disaster.
However, the most intense scene in the film actually comes after the accident, when doctors attempt to surgically remove the metallic tentacle arms that fused to his spine in the incident. Instead, these arms take on a life of their own, as they begin lashing out and killing the surgeons in order to preserve its bond with Otto. The entire scene is chilling, evoking Raimi"s classic horror style as seen in his Evil Dead movie series.
6 Charles Xavier Is Brutally Murdered In Logan Logan was the first Marvel superhero movie from Fox to fully commit to the R-rating. While fans had been crying out for years to see Hugh Jackman play a dark, gritty, and violent version of Wolverine, Logan was the payoff. The movie depicts an aged Logan, who is ill and starting to deteriorate. However, his condition is not quite as bad as his old friend Charles Xaviers. Xavier"s old age has begun to cause him to see visions, and have powerful telekinetically enhanced moments of distress and paranoia as his brain deteriorates.
Related 10 Superhero Movie Characters Who Were Completely Nerfed In Sequels Some superhero movie characters made their return in sequels, only to have their power levels significantly lowered from their previous appearance.
Posts The pair have remained together, with Logan trying to support his old mentor, but in a cruel twist of fate, Charles dies at Logan"s hands. Except, it"s not the Logan that he knows. This is a clone named X-24, and the powerful mutant has the same powers and face as Logan. While the real Logan is able to return to see Xavier take his last breath, it"s deeply upsetting that Charles had even a moment where he felt his dear friend was responsible for his death.
5 Scarlet Witch Single-Handedly Eliminates The Illuminati In Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness Much more recently, in the MCU"s Multiverse Saga, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness delivers another dark scene from the world of Marvel. And, interestingly enough, this scene was also created under the direction of Sam Raimi. The film positions former hero, the Scarlet Witch, against her old ally, Doctor Stephen Strange. Due to the loss of her beloved Vision, and the children she created and raised in Westview, Wanda has gone to the dark side.
Under the influence of the Darkhold, Wanda wields power greater than any she mustered in the MCU up to this point, and she tears the Multiverse apart, searching for a way to reunite her family. However, this mission and dark powers have caused her to become increasingly more monstrous and unfeeling. To the point that when she is confronted by a powerful superhero team known as the Illuminati, she brutally and grotesquely destroys the team in seconds in incredibly violent ways.
4 Moon Knight's Terrifying Childhood With A Cruel & Distant Mother Moon Knight is another project to come out of the Multiverse Saga, and while Oscar Isaac"s character is a complex anti-hero, there is a moment in the show that is incredibly dark. Steven Grant is a seemingly unassuming man who finds himself losing chunks of time and memory. As it turns out, he has dissociative identity disorder, or DID, which means an alter, known as Marc Spector, also shares his body and takes control from time to time. The series does a great job navigating the complexities and the way this aligns with the superhero universe, but the reason behind Steven"s DID is incredibly dark.
Related Should Avengers: Doomsday have multiple Avengers teams? Charlie Cox"s gym claimed he is training for Avengers: Doomsday, meaning Daredevil might be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. That would be perfect if the next Avengers film plans to divide the heroes into multiple teams. Daredevil, Spider-Man, the Punisher, Hawkeye, and others could form a street-level team, while the Young Avengers, a cosmic Avengers team, and more form to take on Robert Downey Jr."s Doctor Doom and any other multiversal threats that rise. With so many stars set to appear, having multiple Avengers teams is the best way to go.
Posts As a boy, Marc lost his brother, Randall, while the two boys were playing. While this was incredibly traumatizing for Marc already, it was made far worse by the fact that his mother blamed him for the death of his brother. After this, Wendy became abusive, violent, cruel, and an alcoholic. When Moon Knight finally reveals the origin of the personality, Steven Grant, it"s incredibly upsetting to witness young Marc cower in fear, before his brain completely checks out, and causes him to become a new character, Steven Grant, to escape the reality of his situation.
3 Killgrave Forcing Jessica Jones Into A Relationship & Murder While the MCU has certainly stepped up the intensity in the Multiverse Saga, Netflix beat them to the punch when it came to having gritty and dark Marvel stories. The Netflix Marvel shows revealed some of the darkest and most disturbing moments from any show, with one of the most intense coming out of the Jessica Jones series. While Jessica is initially a mystery, and she keeps her private life and past incredibly quiet, the show does eventually unpack her history with the terrifying Killgrave.
Killgrave, played by David Tennant, is another powered person who has the ability to convince others to do his bidding simply by telling them to do it. This power is incredibly potent, and leads the victims to commit crimes, murder, and heinous acts that they would never normally give in to without Killgrave"s influence. And when the show reveals Jessica"s history with the Purple Man, it suddenly becomes crystal clear why she is so private and protective of opening up with others.
2 Wilson Fisk Unleashes His Rage With A Car Door In Daredevil Another Netflix Marvel series was widely hailed as one of the best Marvel projects ever made, Daredevil. Part of this praise is due to the incredible performances of both the leading man, Charlie Cox, and the actor who brought his rival to life, Vincent D"Onofrio. Both characters go to extremes to achieve their goals, but while Matt Murdock (Cox) lives by a strict code, Wilson Fisk (D"Onofrio) plays fast and loose with the rules.
Related 10 MCU Decisions That Aged Way Better Than Any Of Us Expected The MCU may have made some controversial decisions to the comic book lore, but some have proven themselves to be an improvement in hindsight.
Posts 1 Daredevil certainly delivered some incredible action and brutal beatdowns in his time patrolling Hell"s Kitchen, but his violence does not compare to the raw aggression and anger of Fisk. Fisk is a large and powerful man, and when he chooses to use his brute strength, it can be overwhelming. With one of the most intense displays of his raw power and rage being seen when he kills the Russian with the aid of a car door. The scene goes on, and on, and on, revealing the intensity of Fisk"s rage.
1 Black Widow's Intro Scene Sees A Young Natasha Romanoff & Other Girls Taken To The Red Room While Black Widow suffered from having a release that happened simultaneously in theaters and via streaming, the movie is one of the most emotional and intense to come out of the MCU. It reveals the origin story of Natasha Romanoff, who was raised to be a spy and assassin through the secret Russian program known as the Red Room. However, this was not a school where she could freely come and go, but a prison that tortured her and molded her into whatever it desired.
Early in the film, the movie reveals that Natasha was already being used by the Russians in order to gain intelligence in America through two adult agents who were planted in the USA with Natasha and Yelena to appear like a normal suburban family. But, in a horrifying twist of cruel fate, Natasha and Yelena discovered that the people they believed were their parents were nothing more than spies using them to play a part. When their mission was completed, they returned home, and the girls were taken to the Red Room, losing everything they knew before in one of the most traumatizing moments in any Marvel project.
