Oscar Isaac"s Moon Knight Just Returned To The MCU, And You"d Never Guess How Marvel Did It In A Million Years

Oscar Isaac is finally back as Moon Knight in the MCU, but in a much different way than many might be expecting. In 2022, Moon Knight somewhat surprisingly led his own show in the MCU, with Oscar Isaac playing the iconic Marvel character. Fast-forward a few years, and Isaac"s dark hero is a very popular character in the MCU, and Moon Knight remains one of the stronger MCU shows of the Disney+ era.
With no Moon Knight season 2 on the horizon as part of Marvel"s upcoming release slate, it remains unclear when Oscar Isaac could return to the MCU, despite fans asking for another season since season 1 finished up its run. The upcoming Avengers movies that end the Multiverse Saga are of course a possibility, but that"s still a long time away. Although it isn"t quite the same as a full-fledged return to the MCU"s Sacred Timeline, Oscar Isaac does play Moon Knight once again in the final season of What If...?
Oscar Isaac Officially Returns To The MCU After 2 Years The MCU's Closest Answer To Batman Is Back Close After first appearing in the MCU as Moon Knight in 2022, Oscar Isaac has finally returned to one of his most beloved characters thanks to Marvel"s multiverse. Moon Knight officially returns to a Marvel Studios project with What If...? season 3, episode 1, "What If... The Hulk Fought the Mecha Avengers?" Given that not every MCU actor reprises their role in the What If...? series, it"s awesome that Oscar Isaac comes back as his character, adding an extra layer of excitement to seeing Moon Knight once again.
Related I Can't Believe Moon Knight Season 2 Hasn't Happened Yet, Almost Three Years After It Premiered Moon Knight season 2 recently received a new update, which was not the best, and the Oscar Isaac MCU series taking so long to return is shocking.
Posts 3 Although his appearance in What If...? is an exciting development, it remains disappointing that no second season of Moon Knight has officially been announced yet, whether Marvel choose to greenlight it down the road. In an October interview with Deadline, Moon Knight director, Mohamed Diab, opened up about the idea of working on another MCU project and whether Moon Knight"s story will continue in future seasons, stating:
“You never know – with Marvel nothing is called finished. There could be a film, or he could go into another universe... Right now nothing is in talks but definitely with Moon Knight, I would love to be involved in anything else and it could happen for sure. I have a great relationship with them.”
What If...? Turns Moon Knight Into An Avenger... And Gives Him A Giant Robot Marc Spector Officially Joins The Mighty Avengers When Moon Knight first premiered, there was very little connecting it to the broader MCU. There were no major character appearances or cameos from previous projects, and it was largely isolated from everything else in the MCU. But now that Moon Knight as a character is back in a Marvel Studios project, he finally gets a chance to interact with other heroes, and this time, he is officially an Avenger. Obviously, this is a variant of the main Moon Knight fans have grown to love, but it is still a significant change from what came before.
It"s possible that Moon Knight will be featured in one of the Avengers films before getting a second season of his own series.
And that"s not to mention the manner of his return, which is definitely at the wilder end of What If..?"s creative spectrum, and reinvents not only Moon Knight but also all of the Avengers. The new generation of Avengers, who replace the originals when they"re killed by new MCU Hulk villain The Apex, includes Spector, Simu Liu"s Shang-Chi, Anthony Mackie"s Sam Wilson, and others like Red Guardian and Nakia. And in their mission to defeat the new breed of HUlk and its Gamma Beast army, the Avengers are equipped with giant mech-suits created by Tony Stark.
Moon Knight"s mecha-Avengers armor continues his Ancient Egyptian aesthetic, with sickle-like moon ornamentation and a similar design to Spector"s "mummy" costume. Its forearms are fitted with massive scythe blades, and it"s arguably one of the coolest ever armors developed by Tony Stark in the MCU. The battle culminates in the reveal of an evolution of the mecha-Avengers as Bruce Banner programs them to combine into a Voltron/MegaZord armor immediately christened the Mighty Avenger, which wields Moon Knight"s blades as a ferocious looking staff.
It"s fun to see giant mechs in a Marvel Studios project, but including Moon Knight in that episode of What If...? is a bold swerve away from the tone of his solo MCU project. That"s exactly why the multiverse animation exists, of course, but when Moon Knight ended, there can be absolutely nobody in the world who would have predicted that this is how we"d next see him.
