It sounds like you should expect an emotional climax to Sony"s Spider-Verse movies when Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse finally releases. That"s according to star Bryan Tyree Henry, who plays Miles Morales" father Jeff in the animated Marvel movies.
The upcoming Beyond The Spider-Verse"s release date was initially announced as March 2024, a confident prediction from the studio considering the turnover of work required on the previous two chapters of the critically acclaimed franchise. Sadly, the release date of one of the most exciting upcoming Marvel movies was removed, with insider reports suggesting poor work practices and a grind culture that reflected poorly on the studio.
Playfully questioned by The Fire Inside co-star about his part in delaying Beyond The Spider-Verse in an interview with Variety, Henry played up to suggestions his schedule is to blame, before promising the trilogy-ender will be worth the wait:
[indent] HENRY: In all due time. We have to conclude it. It has to be concluded. Can you imagine if we were like, “That’s it. He’s in a portal and that’s it.”
DESTINY: Is it your fault, Brian, because you’re too booked and busy? Is it because of your schedule?
HENRY: First of all, that’s loaded. And yes, the answer is yes. No, look, it takes time, but we got to make you wait a little bit. You know what I mean? But it’s coming. It’s coming. There’s not going to be a dry eye in the house. I’ll tell you that. Good luck. It’s not going to wrap up in a nice little bow what things do.
[/indent]Surely that doesn"t spell good news for Jeff Morales? Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse currently has no confirmed release date, though Deadline have reported that Sony plans to release it in 2025.
What Bryan Tyree Henry's Comments Mean For Beyond The Spider-Verse It"s unlikely Henry"s comments about his own schedule delaying Beyond The Spider-Verse are anything more than a joke between co-stars. In early December, co-star Jharrel Jerome, who played Miles G Morales (or "evil Miles" as he may be known), revealed to ScreenRant that he was yet to record any of his lines, confirming he knew very little about the movie so far, but similarly teased big story swings:
[indent] I... can"t really say so much more because, you know, that"s such a tight-knit ship. I don"t even know much. I"m as much in the dark as you, but I"m excited to get back into it and see what they"re thinking, especially involving my character. That was such a badass twist to the last one.
[/indent]Animating something this big takes time. In September 2024, producer Chris Miller confirmed that "the reels are coming along nicely" after speculation that the movie had been scrapped appeared online. Prior to that, when the delay was initially revealed, in July 2023, a Sony source told Variety that the delay was "due to union’s work stoppage orders" meaning "the voice cast cannot complete dialogue recording in time for the spring opening". Despite the promise of an imminent release date announcement, none has been forthcoming.
As for Henry"s promise of a tear-jerking story, that fits with the ending of Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, during which multiverse-hopping villain The Spot (Jason Schwartzman) vowed to kill Miles" father Jeff and The Spider Society tragically revealed to Miles that his father"s death was a canon event that must happen. It would be reasonable to assume Miles" relationship with his father, and the potential death of the latter will play a huge part in Beyond The Spider-Verse"s plot.
Our Take On Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse's Tear-Jerker Promise Close The wider theme of Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse and indeed both Spider-Verse movies to date is the limit of fated existence, and the power of self-determination. Miles Morales seizes his own fate when he refuses to sit out the battle in the first movie, and then fights back against what he sees as the tyranny of the Spider Society"s control on approved canon events. They effectively act as the TVA in this universe, and Miles rebels the same way Loki and Sylvie fight back against both the TVA and He Who Remains in Loki.
Unfortunately, canon events in the Spider-Verse feel concrete, and it"s likely that Miles will have to face the reality that Jeff must die for his entire universe to survive. And that"s certainly going to deliver on the "no dry eyes" promise Bryan Tyree Henry just dropped. Fundamentally, superheroes face tragedy throughout the history of capes and cowls - both on the page and on screen - and Miles" journey probably has to go dark before it ends in Beyond The Spider-Verse. And at the end of the day, as long as the film is as good as the first two, the delay will be entirely justified.
